Fifth Grade Medieval Faire

by Esther Liu, a High School Junior at Carrollton Christian Academy

Knights jousting on noble steeds with pointed lances and fair maidens feasting on dried fruit and cider could be found in the courtyard of the gothic-styled castle. Well, perhaps the magnificent steeds were merely broomstick horses; the sharpened lances, multicolored pool noodles; the cider, apple juice; and the crowded courtyard, the FUMC building; but to the Carrollton Christian Academy fifth graders, they were at a medieval fair.

The fifth grade classes, led by fifth grade teachers Barbara Claycomb and Brook Hughes, held a medieval party to accompany their class novel, the Medallion by Dawn Watkins and E. Anne Smith. The novel is set in a fantasy world in ancient times with a young boy and his journey to become king. Through the novel, the students observed the interactions between people during that time period.Earlier in the week, the students had created code of arms, swords, and special hats. The costume-clad students had an opportunity to experience the feudal era through a multitude of activities. Along with the jousting, there was a ball toss, tug-of-war, chess, and checkers, all set against the background of minstrel music. In addition to the activities, the students sampled chicken wings, grilled sausages, and whole wheat bread to go with their apple juice. Fifth grader Gabby Dellepiane exclaimed, “It was a lot of fun tasting all the food and playing the games.”

“The medieval fair was the perfect ending to the historical study of the Middle Ages. Combining fun and learning is always a goal of good teachers,” commented Mrs. Claycomb.
