I’ll admit it; I was really torn on the ride to Resistol Arena in Mesquite last week.
On one hand, my mom scared me to death when I told her that Aly and I might ride a bull on our next adventure. On the other hand—how often would I get the opportunity to ride a bull? Come on!
Mesquite neighborsgo editor Jenice called me a wuss several times for leaning to the “to not ride” side of things. Aly agreed hands down to mount the large animal.
I decided I would wait until we got to the arena and see how I felt.
Have you ever seen a bull in person? I’ve seen bulls on TV, but never up close. Approaching Barney the Bull was scary enough…I could see his beady large eye staring at me as I walked up.
He was just hanging out, chillin’ while I was scared to death.
I’m not afraid of large animals. If you know me at all, you know I’m obsessed with dogs. (One day I will own a mastiff…) Barney was different. I think I could feel every step he took.
I talked to his owner who raised him from a little guy. He made sure to tell me that ‘ol Barney was a kind animal who often takes pictures with 2-year-old children on his back. That’s what swayed me.
The once brave Aly was cowering behind me pushing me toward Barney saying “you go first, you’re older.”
Thanks, Aly!
Filming began and next thing I knew I was on Barney’s back clutching onto a piece of rope for dear life. (I later learned that the reason bulls buck is because of that rope over their shoulders and under their legs. I always thought they bucked because the rope was tied around their privates…the cowboys quickly reassured me that was false. But if they would have told me that the reason bulls buck is because of the same piece of rope I was grasping onto, I don’t think I would have been hoisted up there)
Luckily, the massive animal was pretty tame. Every now and then he would start shaking his head; that was the scariest part. (You might think, ‘no big deal; he’s shaking his head.’ When that huge animal shook his head, everything shook. I think I even felt the Resistol Arena creaking…)
After all that, I’m glad I’m here to share the tale of Barney the bull.
Oh, and my mom wasn’t too happy. After she watched the video, it made up for it…at least a little bit.
