The women’s group at Holy Trinity by the Lake Episcopal Church in Heath is excited about our upcoming parish-wide “garage sale” to be held on May 16 and 17. It will be a fundraiser for our many ministries and programs and we thought your congregation might be interested in taking advantage. Our 2007 event was an outstanding success with many quality donations wonderfully organized and displayed for sale. Not were customers from all over Dallas pleased to acquire many great bargains, but so was Austin Street Homeless Shelter, to whom we donated all unsold goods afterwards. As before, our goods are of outstanding quality, some of which are new or barely used, but priced to sell. There will be incredible items donated by our parishioners, as well as items that are not being used by our church or day school that is now closed. If it is appropriate, we hope you will either post the enclosed flyer on your message board or copy it for insertion in your service bulletin. More

The Irving Elk’s Lodge will host the 29th annual Top of Texas chili cookoff and related activities Saturday, May 17th. The cook-off will benefit Elk’s sponsored charitable programs. The cook-off will be conducted under CASI rules (Chili Appreciation Society of America). The public is invited to attend cook, learn more about cooking chili forcharity, view the cooking booths, and help judge the entries. Interesting ‘show teams’ also provide colorful entertainment during the event. Cooking will start in the morning with chili turn-in at 2:00PM with judging immediately thereafter. Admission is free but there is a $20 entry fee per cook to join in the competition. We invite anyone interested in cooking chili to come out and join the activities. Don’t be intimidated by the experienced cooks. Many times, first-time cooks will walk away with one of the top places.

The Frisco Public Art Board has announced the opening of the exhibition “Local Color” featuring artists Jim VanKirk and T. Scott Stromberg on Thursday, May 19th and running through July 17th. The show is the second installment in the series, "Art in the Atrium" showcasing local art in the impressive five-story Frisco City Hall. After four years of highly successful Summer Dinner Lectures, the Dallas Peace Center has expanded their concept to bring three exhilarating speakers to Dallas throughout the summer months. The first speaker, Rita Marie Johnson, founder of the Academy for Peace of Costa Rica, will deliver “A Nation’s Peace Story” on June 4 at FunAsia, 1210 E. Beltline Rd., Richardson. Dinner will be at 6:30 and the lecture at 7:30 p.m. In 2002, Johnson founded the Academy for Peace of Costa Rica (APCR) in 2003 with the aim of citizens passing peaceful skills from generation to generation. The Teen Camp program is a TRAPS 2007 award winner and is offered to youth ages 13-18 years. This is a life preperation program to help teens develop skills and assets that are important to growing up healthy, principled and caring. Particpants will spend half of their day gaining knowledge through hands on projects, field trips and listening to guest speakkers. The remainder of the day will be spent working with the children in Camp Do-It-All gaining valuable experience. Teen camp participants will go on field trips of their won as well as some with Camp Do-It-All. Camps will be held at Denton Creek and Cottonwood Creek Elementary in Coppell. Camp Do-it-All is an award winning summer day camp program for children ages 6-12 years. Camp dates are June 9- August 22. Activities include outdoor and indoor sports, borad games, crafts, swimming and don't forget those excellent field trips! Hours are Monday-Friday 7am- 6:30pm, except for the July 4th Holiday, Camp will be closed in Obervation. Camp is staffed with op-notch counselors ranging from school teachers to college students. Counselors undergo drug testing and criminal background checks prior to employment. Camp T-shirts are required to be worn everyday. The Rockwall High School Alumni Association will hold the 58th annual Rockwall All Class Banquet and Reunion on Saturday, June 14 at Rockwall High School. All RHS alumni and friends are invited to attend. Alumni President Shana Smith Nalls stated, “The dinner will be a buffet style BBQ dinner with the program featuring speakers from each of the classes honored this year…1938, 1948, 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988, and 1998”. There will also be an exciting Live Auction benefiting the RHS Alumni Scholarship fund.
