Fri 20 Jun 2008 7:00 PM The Spell of Sleeping Beauty
In the kingdom of Never Nod there's celebration. A princess has been born to the King and Queen. Her name is Briar-Rose. Unfortunately, that nasty witch, Evilina, who lives in Tumbledown Castle with a giant spider for a companion, is not invited. She shows up anyway and pronounces her revenge. At age 16, the princess will cut her finger on a spinning wheel and fall into a deep sleep from which she'll never awake. Some good witches counter the curse by saying the princess can be awakened by the kiss of true love. The King bans all spinning wheels. Evilina is not so easily defeated and, on that fateful birthday, the princess does, indeed, cut her finger on a spinning wheel. It's up to Prince Alexander to come to Briar-Rose's rescue--and the court's too. They're all asleep! The prince must fight a Wall of Thorns, a False Princess and, most frightening of all--the awesome Dark Knight! This captivating, frolicsome version of the always-popular classic has it all--charm, action, ro

Sat 21 Jun 2008 8:00 AM Hike for Discovery Kick Off - White Rock Lake
How do you go from strolling the hills around White Rock Lake to hiking the highest peaks of Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park? One White Rock resident has found the answer: Hike for Discovery! Hike For Discovery is a hiking and fundraising program for people who love to be in the great outdoors and want to help people battling cancer. The program is organized by The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which many people around our neighborhood know for their Team in Training events. Joe Dann is a Hike for Discovery participant and Team Captain for a training season that kicks off next week at White Rock Lake. “I walk three miles or more almost every day at White Rock and love it, but I was looking for a way to take it up a notch. That’s when I found Hike for Discovery”. Last January, Dann joined the group and has trained all spring for a hike event at Yosemite National Park. Sat 21 Jun 2008 9:00 AM New Event
This summer, McKinney-Custer area residents will likely take advantage of the more than 166 lakes, 11 amusement parks, 10 zoos and six water parks in Texas. But summer travel doesn’t always account for the furry members of the family. The good news is that local area pet parents don’t have to be rich or famous to make sure their pets can take a bite (so to speak) out of the good life. On June 21, the region’s first PetsHotel will officially open its doors at the PetSmart location at 8676 State High 121. With more than 5,000 square feet at their disposal, canine and feline PetsHotel guests are treated to a high-quality day and overnight care service. Amenities range from poochy cots and hypoallergenic lambskin blankets to supervised play and park-like relief areas.

Tue 24 Jun 2008 7:00 PM Scahill "Blackwater" Booksigning
Many political commentators draw similarities between the Vietnam War and the current Iraq War. The Cold War ~ The War on Terror. The Soviet Union ~ al Qaeda. Ho Chi Minh ~ Saddam Hussein. These are specters that the government props up as legitimate reasons to pre-emptively invade another country. However, there is one big difference between the illegitimate war of this generation, and the former illegal war: THE DRAFT. How has the military avoided a draft? One way is by the privatization of the military. Companies like Blackwater are legalized paramilitary troops - killers for hire. And why join the army when you can make beaucoup bucks with private corporations - with more benefits and less oversight? Jeremy Scahill investigates these and other issues in his book, "Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army." The Dallas Peace Center is hosting a talk and booksigning with the author later this month.
