I was asked several weeks ago to write a blog about living with a child that has bipolar disorder. I've vacillated on this because my son didn't want me to write his story. I feel his story needs to be heard so there can be an open dialogue about mental illness/brain disorders. My son is eleven. He was diagnosed at age seven. If you would like more info there is a class being offered. Type in "help for parents of children with mental illness". It should take you to a site about the class. I will add to this blog every other day about our story. It's funny, heartwarming, and at times heartbreaking. bonnieandjeff

bipolar child - short journey
The MHMR journey was a short lived journey.  So many factors play into whether Heath will be accepted or not.  Right now the answer is no until I get a letter from Cobra saying it runs out in April and that still may not be enough.  If he's not eligible for medicaid when Cobra runs out he may not be accepted or he may be accepted on a case by case basis depending on the waiting list because MHMR accepts medicaid patients first.  He may not be eligible for medicaid if Jeff keeps his job through next year, which we still don't know if he will, because Jeff makes too much money, which is the main reason we can't put the kids on CHIP.  What doesn't make sense to me is if Jeff gets a job with insurance but there has been a lapse for Heath and we have to wait for the insurance to cover Heath's pre-existing condition, then MHMR said they would be able to cover Heath during that time.  I think I'll go bang my head against the wall and see if I can pound my throbbing headache away:).
