A team of West JH faculty and administrators "schooled" some of their 8th-graders Thursday afternoon, but the lessons didn't center around mathematics or science.
Rather, the faculty handed members of West's 8th-grade boys and girls basketball teams lessons on the pick-and-roll, alley-oop and fast break in basketball by downing the student squad 35-10 in the school's annual Faculty vs. Students basketball game.
Playing in front of a packed gymnasium on the day before Spring Break, the game featured alternating quarters in which the female faculty would play members of the West JH 8th-grade girls' basketball team, followed by a quarter of play between the male teachers and the 8th-grade boys' hoopsters.
The faculty team jumped out to an early 13-0 lead against the West girls in the first quarter and never looked back. In the second quarter, the faculty men widened the gap to 22-0 before halftime highlighted by a textbook alley-oop pass from 8th grade boys' basketball coach Michael Westfall to 7th-grade boys' basketball coach Ryan Parker. The play drew a chorus of 'ooohs' and 'aaahs' from the student crowd packed in the stands.
In the second half, the West students got on the scoreboard during the girls' play in the third quarter, but still found themselves behind 35-2. In the fourth quarter, the West boys stormed back — outscoring their elder opponents 8-0 in the frame — but faced too great a deficit to change the outcome.
The end-of-day school bell signaled the end of the game and the beginning of Spring Break for the West JH community which drew a lot of smiles from students and teachers alike.
