American Idol: PBC patient inspired by Jason Castro

This is Mary Anne Simpson, wearing her dreads in support of Jason Castro.

"If it wasn't for Jason, I wouldn't be here," she said, standing outside the Hilton Bella Harbor in Rockwall. "He inspires me."

Mary Anne has overcome great obstacles to be here. She has an incurable auto immune disease known as Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, or PBC. It is a progressive disease that primarily affects women, and leads to cirrhosis and liver failure. Mary Anne experiences a lot of fatigue, but she finds energy and hope in Jason Castro.

"I was channel surfing one day, and of course the writer's strike was on, and I came to American Idol, and there was Jason singing "Daydreaming Boy." It uplifted me. God is ministering through Jason Castro, to help people like me."

After the show, I caught up with Mary Anne again, who remarked that she'd been following our blog posts on neighborsgo, but she never dreamed her picture would be on it.  I asked her more about her disease and she said, "I used to be a one in a million. But now, the disease is affecting about one in every 500,000."

She added that PBC doesn't have a Michael J. Fox or some other high profile person who has gotten PBC, and therefore there's no celebrity spokesperson bringing attention to this disease.

"Who would have thought that Jason Castro would help me spread the message about PBC, by putting me in the media spotlight?" she said. "God is working through him."

And once again, I am touched beyond words.

You'll see more of Mary Anne in our neighborsgo video of the watch party, coming soon.
