FlowerMoundHigh School is Pinking Out for breast cancer awareness as the Jaguar cheerleaders Pink Out the (Fossil Ridge) Panthers at their first home game and pep rally on Friday, September 4th.
“We’re always here to support the Flower Mound Jaguars, but we’re also raising funds for something near and dear to our hearts—as cheerleaders and as members of the Flower Mound High School community—in support of breast cancer awareness through the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation,” said varsity cheerleader coach, Shonna Chaney.
Cheerleaders will be selling pink t-shirts, pink tattoos and asking everyone at the game to fill up their pink megaphones with donations to aid the Komen foundation. Educational materials will be available as well.
“There are many families in our school that have been affected by breast cancer. We have two girls on our cheer squad right now whose mothers are battling the disease, so it really hits close to home,” Chaney said. “We want to do what we can to help find a cure starting with the Pink Out. Next, we’ll focus on plans for October, which is breast cancer awareness month, and throughout the year to follow."
Varsity squad member Kala Copeland knows personally the impact breast cancer has on a family. She explained how it has changed her family’s past, present and future:
“My sister and I have never had a grandmother because of this disease,” said Kala. “My mom lost her mother to breast cancer when she was only nine years old and my dad lost his mother when he was just fifteen. I’m sure it was devastating to my parents to grow up without mothers.”
Kala has learned practical and heartfelt life lessons as a result of her connection to the disease. “My sister and I have to start yearly mammograms at the age of eighteen instead of forty, like most women. I’m more appreciative of my parents because I know this disease can take someone you love at any time. I have had many friends battle breast cancer with their moms and they are some of the strongest, most amazing women I know. I’m so glad our cheer program chose breast cancer awareness as our community fundraiser,” Kala said.
We’re all aware of the economics times we live in so remember, if you can’t buy pink, just wear pink in support of a special evening to honor those who are fighting breast cancer now, those who have struggled and won and for those whose memory we honor. Invite all your friends and neighbors to come out for a great night of football and a truly worthy cause.
