Marcel Fenech of Plano nearly took his 7-year-old daughter to the Stanford Championships at Dr Pepper StarCenter in Frisco on Friday night.
"I'm glad I didn't," Fenech said.
Fenech had a courtside seat to see two of the greatest names in pro tennis square off. However, one of those legendary names was calling him names that he'd rather not repeat.
John McEnroe, visibly upset at a few calls that didn't go his way in his match with Pat Cash, turned on Fenech when Fenech implored McEnroe to watch his mouth and be a pro.
"I told him 'language, language, language,' " Fenech said after the match, which was won by Cash.
At several points in the match, McEnroe cussed at line judges and challenged numerous calls.
The crowd seemed to be pro-McEnroe when the match began, but got behind Cash when it became apparent that McEnroe would be vintage McEnroe.
Later in the match, McEnroe singled out Fenech when he heard Fenech cheering against him.
McEnroe berated Fenech for applauding a double fault.
Fenech's loyalty paid off. Late in the match, Cash gave Fenech one of his trademark checkered bandanas -- autographed and ready to be given as a gift to a certain 7-year-old.
Fenech put on the bandana. The crowd cheered. McEnroe laid off.
In the end, Fenech wore a big grin after a tournament official invited him back. Meanwhile, McEnroe wore his usual grim look while he signed autographs on his way out of the arena.
Hear one of McEnroe's tongue-lashings (warning: bad language ahead).
