Not that long ago, I was a Nebraska resident working for a small newspaper called The North Platte Telegraph. Actually, maybe it was that long ago...2003-2004 to be exact. As you can imagine, we got our share of snow. However the few times that it did during that year, I was told that, "This is nothing..." Because the town was so small, my naivety driving in snow wasn't as much of a hazard as it could have been being that everything was just five minutes away with no need to brave the highway.

And so my normal M.O. of being a horrible bad weather driver never improved. Hence today's icy conditions have me retreating to my home...Is there a driving boot-camp for people like me?

This just in from the Arlington PD:

The bridges at IH-20 and SH 360 have been closed temporarily due to icing.  Arlington Police Department is working with the Texas Department of Transportation to sand the bridges.  There are currently no collisions on the bridges that have been reported.  As soon as the bridges are open (unknown time estimate), we will let you know.

You're watching the weather forecasts deciding whether to commute or work from home.

Consider these tips on: Driving on ice | removing ice from windshields | warming up the car.

In college, I bought gas for 29 cents a gallon. My 9-year-old saw gas for $2.05 recently, prompting him to say, "Dad, I remember when it was $2 a gallon."

Someone in the cubicle mentioned getting gas for $1.89. I'm wondering if it's like the stock market: Is it a good time to get back in and actually fill my tank.

The price of gas has got us talking again. What have you got to say?

Let us know where you see any good bargains.

This just in from the Arlington Police Department: Arlington police are investigating a major accident at southbound State Highway 360 and the Interstate 30 interchange (around Six Flags Over Texas). Lane closures are expected at the Southbound 360 entrance to Westbound 30.  Police expect heavy traffic congestion in this area until approximately 5 p.m.

If you use Blair Oaks and South Colony in your driving around The Colony, you might want to add some extra minutes to your commute time. Traffic signal repairs have turned the intersection into essentially a four-way stop. Nothing too bad. You can get the full scoop here.

Thanks goes to City Girl (aka Diane Baxter, communications director/assistant to the city manager) for this update. She is always on the ball when it comes to keeping the community aware of roadway progress and good news that highlights people, places, events and various news in The Colony.

Texas A&M University is conducting a survey on behalf of a lot of transporation entities to determine what needs to be developed along the Tom Landry Freeway.

The 10-minute survey is mostly about HOV lanes between Loop 12 and State Highway 360 on Interstate 30. Nothing wrong with that.

Someday, I wished they'd ask about that crazy interchange, mixmaster, loop-de-loop, whatever, at Loop 12 and I-30.

For commuters heading to south Fort Worth or southwest Arlington, it looks like it might be an adventure on the trip home (hmmm, that sounds like a radio traffic alert).  Four tractor-trailer rigs hopped on a fumble on westbound Interstate 20 between Green Oaks Boulevard and U.S. 287 and have snarled traffic for miles as authorities clear the mess. I bet it looks like a scene out of Transformers, the movie.

If you have traffic news to report, post it here at this Crosstown Traffic 2.0 blog.

Chalk it up to another sign of progress-in-the-making in Frisco. And anyone who drives anywhere near Frisco on State Highway 121 on a daily basis knows exactly what I'm talking about. It's the good and the not-so-good all in one. Before the drive home, be sure to check out this Frisco road closure on the neighborsgo.com blog. It might just save you some valuable time.
