We were pounded over the head with that Horton Hears a Who trailer, so I wasn't expecting much. Turns out it was a very good movie. Parents felt the old Dr. Seuss style and got an underlying message about faith. The kids were exposed to the Seuss rhythm that made reading Seuss books so fun. And Jim Carrey and Steve Carrell were perfect. Also, I won't be able to watch Carol Burnett without thinking of her as a kangaroo. Go see it.

A little bit about me before my mini-review of Semi-Pro. I played high school basketball in the 1970s. I wore Lucky Chucks. I wore white tube socks that went to my knees. And, yes, I did wear the Daisy Duke basketball shorts. My teammates had sideburns and Afros. I had a Bee Gees shag cut. (more)

Did anyone catch Persepolis, the animated film about a girl growing up Iranian, before it left Dallas theaters? I read both of the books by Marjane Satrapi, and was waiting for a friend of mine to finish them, but she didn't complete the books before I noticed the movie wasn't playing in our area anymore. That's what I don't like about independent and low budget films--you have to catch them right away or they are forever gone from the big screen.

So I've been wanting to see Penelope for quite some time. I'm a huge James McAvoy fan and love Christina Ricci. In fact, I used to get told I looked like her a lot when I was younger. Anyways.

The film is only showing in a limited number of theatres in the DFW area, so my boyfriend and I had to trek it out to Hurst to see it on the big, digital screens at Rave.

The movie was cute and entertaining. Reese Witherspoon was hilarious. Her role was anything but the pretty, put together, dumb character she always tends to play. It was refreshing.

One thing puzzled me about the film, however. I could never quite determine the setting. The homes looked strikingly London-esque. A few characters had English accents, quite a few had Irish and the homegrown, Scottish James McAvoy had an...American accent? I was befuddled.

All location confusions aside, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It's good for a family, date or just a night out with good friends. 3/4 stars.

Gas is on pace to hit four bucks a gallon this summer. That's going to put a crimp in most of our vacation plans. So, chances are we'll be heading to the movies. Check here for contributors' reviews, or join in on the fun by e-mailing tcummings@neighborsgo.com.
