Writer and director Judd Apatow has topped himself again with FUNNY PEOPLE. He pioneered combining raw emotions with raunchy antics and takes that formula further than ever with his new film. (more)

The new film from Nora Ephron "Julie & Julia" hits theaters Friday August 7th. Julia as in Child and Julie as in Powell. One a famous cook and the other, well, a writer who cooks. I had a chance to sit down for a discussion with Julie the writer and she chatted about her film, her book and her blog. As you read along, click on the links to hear Julie tell it in her own words!

I had an epiphany on the way home from screening the new romantic comedy The Ugly Truth. It was like the movie curtains parted and a huge Dolby Digital voice boomed from a CGI balcony; Real life has more to do with the romantic comedy than we think. Films of this genre are so hit and miss yet it is hard sometimes to pinpoint why. It is the same with real relationships. Many times two people just don’t hit it off and both parties try and figure out what went wrong and why the good times were not enough to make up for the bad. There is no solid answer. Why does a film like The Proposal work magnificently and others with the same concept and template fail? The same reason some people are married 50 years and others can’t make it 500 days. It is just the ugly truth of it all. (more)

I’ve never walked out of a movie and I don’t know if I ever will, barring extreme physical illness. But I came awfully close to walking out of THE UGLY TRUTH.

The new “battle of the sexes” themed comedy from director Robert Luketic starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler is insulting, moronic, and – worst of all – predictable.

Very seldom do you get a film that has talking animals in combination with a plot that can hold the attention of anyone over the age of 10. G-Force is a film that I was not excited about seeing. I expected it to be cute and safe but little more than that. What I failed to take in to consideration was the Jerry Bruckheimer name. I should know by now that JB seldom allows for mediocrity, even when dealing with talking moles and guinea pigs. So what I discovered was a well developed, fantastic looking film that had as much action as any film this summer; even if it was on a much smaller scale. (more)

Kudos go to Dallas native Russ Pond rejecting the corporate world and stepping into his role as a new filmmaker several years ago.  Forming Pup Media in 1998, he began work on his first feature, Fissure, as producer, director/editor.  The film is now making the Film Festival and Art Film circuit.

The gangs all here and better than ever in this bold entry to the already steller series.

Who in the world could have guessed that a film that appears as the fifth sequel in a series could actually succeed as good movie? Usually by the third or fourth movie, the series becomes flawed, far too dissimilar to the originals before it, and usually just ridiculous, as if they had run out of creative ideas (see the Spider-Man series). But you won’t find any such problems in the Wizard world of Harry Potter where the Sixth installment, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, lo and behold isn’t just good, it’s actually better than the films that precede it.

I will be the first to say that I am a fan of the romantic comedy. The right on screen chemistry can make for a fun, though seldom memorable, time at the theater. That said they usually all follow the same template. Boy meets, loses, reclaims. Roll the credits. (500) Days of Summer does what few films in this genre dare to do. That is show the reality of the pain that relationships can be.

This film is an avant garde existentialist Russian stew with several individualistic techniques coloring the piece. The wardrobe department hung their over-the-top whacko clothing on the actors to create a surreal dreamlike effect. Add to that a make up department on steroids that painted all main characters with dramatic eye and facial makeup so extreme that their images become a distraction and make it difficult to absorb the dialogue.
