The weekend of Dec.6-7, I ventured north from my South Dallas condo to experience Christmas suburbs
style.
My event schedule began Thursday night with a visit to the Allen
Economic Development Corporation's Holiday Open House. There I met several
contributors, gobbled up stuffed mushrooms, shrimp and Celebrity Bakery petit
fours, and was introduced to new residents, business people of Allen. It was
cozy bumping elbows with the City of Allen
officials, real estate developers, PR reps, and AEDC hostesses.
On Friday, the Pancake Breakfast with Santa kicked off a
host of other weekend events including the Rudolph Run 5K and the Christmas
Tree Lighting at the Village at Allen. Local, renowned pianist Jared Johnson
performed his Christmas album for event goers at the Tree Lighting, while
children posed with a live longhorn, wrote letters to Santa, met the reindeer
and sat on Santa's lap for a photo.
The holiday and Allen events continued into Saturday. The
most notably being the AllenHigh School football team
defeating Euless Trinity at Texas Stadium, and moving closer to the state
championship game (one more win and they are in the big game).
Also on Saturday, the Allen Nativity Exhibit continued (it
began on Friday, Dec. 5) to demonstrate the Christmas spirit for residents. The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ annual Christmas gift to the City
includes an opulently decorated gym filled with hundreds of nativities from all
over the world adorning table tops.
The twinkling lights created an aura of candlelight as
families strolled the exhibit. Music filled the air as local musicians, like
pianist Jared Johnson, performed throughout the entire event. Behind the performers,
Renee Kirk as Mary and Jordan Herald as Joseph presented the Bible’s manger
scene.
The hospitality of the exhibit volunteers was also
memorable.
The Allen Rotary Christmas Parade brought the weekend of
holiday events to a spectacular close Sunday afternoon. Beginning at 2 p.m.,
the parade featured the AHS and Lovejoy Bands, the AHS Talonettees and
cheerleaders, Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops, local Churches, the Police and
Fire Departments, City officials and much more.
For the Dec. 19 issue (and in last week’s Dec. 12 issue),
Allen neighborsgo is featuring photos from the holiday events mentioned above, as well as others
that have followed. There were too many great photos to choose from, so I
decided to feature as many as possible with a two-part Christmas special. I
hope you enjoy it.
