With all the doom and gloom that’s being reported in the news these days, there doesn’t seem to be much cause for celebration.

Gas prices are on the rise, the housing market is depressed, unrelenting lay-offs are creating record-breaking unemployment -- our nation is struggling to regain its financial footing.

But, buck up!

Summer is officially here and Fourth of July is just around the corner – you know what that means – good, old-fashioned burgers, brats, beer and, best of all, fireworks.

Can’t wait for the festivities to begin? You don’t have to! The 13th annual Allen USA Celebration not only offers a fantastic fireworks show at 10 p.m. Saturday at Celebration Park, but is also hosting an all-day, All-American extravaganza! Start putting on those flip-flops.

The City of Allen, the Allen Parks Foundation, sponsors and vendors have planned an amazing “First to the Fourth” party for you, your family, and your friends – did I mention that admission is FREE? But, stop by the ATM; you’ll need cash for food and tickets.

There will be music, State Fair-style concessions, games and fireworks – fun for the whole family.

If you are reading this after 11:59 a.m. and aren’t already at the celebration, you are missing out on the exciting happening right now.

Do your kids watch Nick Toons all day? Pull them off the couch and take them to the Allen USA’s Activity Zone for the Nickelodeon LIVE Show at 1 and 3 p.m. – they could get slimed!

Teens can rock out to the Battle of the Bands concert, which is also happening in the Activity Zone.

The little ones will delight in the Kid Zone, where more than 18 inflatables, an obstacle course, face painting and a crafts tent await their amusement.

Following performances by opening bands scheduled throughout the day, Three Dog Night, the headlining musical attraction, will begin at 8 p.m. on the main stage. The band is known for their hit songs, “Mama Told Me (Not to Come)” and “Joy to the World,” made famous between the 1960s and late 1970s.

It’s easy to overlook the positive and forget to have fun with all the negativity out there, but today, stir up some excitement! Go to Celebration Park, grab a funnel cake or two, meet me at the neighborsgo booth, sit with your sweetie under the stars and watch your children shriek in excitement as the firecrackers snap, crackle and pop. I hope to see you there!

And, as always, don’t forget to share your Allen USA Celebration or other Fourth of July memories with us. Publish your post-event photos and stories online at neighborsgo.com and your family’s pictures might just make the cover of our next issue.

As a Dallas girl, born-and-raised, my years as a tot and tween were spent further south, but, as I transitioned into high school at Canyon Creek Christian Academy in Richardson, some of the most memorable experiences of my life occurred just north, in Allen.

Arriving at CCCA, I discovered that I was unlike most of my classmates. They were mostly from the suburbs of Allen, Frisco and Plano, and these neighborhoods soon became my stomping grounds.

One of my very best friends, Kristin Peterson, daughter of Dr. Kirk and Ruth Ann Peterson, moved to Allen shortly after we met. She and I became fast friends when we discovered a mutual obsession with N’SYNC and Josh Hartnett. Her move to Twin Creeks II was a pleasant one; a bigger house enabled us to spread out our Hartnett-movie marathons, makeover parties and, one night, while hyped up on Dr. Pepper, where we baked hundreds of cookies to raise money for our senior trip to Europe.

My friend Julian Samler, son of Timothy and Jolanta Samler, lived in Twin Creeks, too. His house was home to the fattest cat I’ve ever seen, Dennis, and to nights of laughing so hard with my friends that we’d cry.

For me, Allen reminds me of blissful moments – moments when you are so content and carefree. What a place to call home!

I am so glad to be a part of the neighborsgo team, but even happier to represent the neighborhood that is home to some of my most memorable moments – a first kiss, a New Year’s Eve party and a fat-suit adventure along McDermott Road. Don't ask.

Eventually, high school ended and I ventured away from Allen and the rest of Collin County to attend the University of North Texas in Denton. After two years, I transferred to the University of Arkansas; UNT just wasn’t the right place for me.

Did I mention Kristin and my high school sweetheart went to UA, too?

While taking a basic news reporting class, I found my career calling – journalism. I immediately pursued work at my college newspaper, The Arkansas Traveler, as an editor and columnist. That is where I met my good friend, Kendall Muellner, the layout/copy editor for the Richardson and Lake Highland sections of neighborsgo. Did you know she was a Razorback?

After graduating from college in December, I began the inevitable first job hunt. During my search, I married my high school sweetheart, Michael Irvin – not the former Dallas Cowboy – and went on our amazing honeymoon in Hawaii. When I returned, I found this terrific job!

Talk about major life changes and memories!

I know you are creating your own special memories each day and we want to hear about them! I encourage you to post your stories and photos online at neighborsgo.com – no event is too small! We represent you and are here to spread the news of your new job, your child’s scholarship, your restaurant opening – whatever is happening tomorrow or happened yesterday – please share it with us!

I can't wait to learn more about each of you and share in the memorable times of your lives.

I can be reached at 469-330-5685,  lirvin@neighborsgo.com or at neighborsgo.com/lindsayirvin. I look forward to hearing from you!
