Kerr Elementary School recently celebrated its first reading day with the help of guest author/illustrator Matthew McElligott. Students learned the steps that an author goes through in order to get their book published.

McElligott also demonstrated illustration techniques that he used in his books. Teachers and students joined in the day’s fun by dressing like characters from the author's books, “Backbeard Pirate for Hire” and “The Lion’s Share.”

Bolin Elementary third-graders Kate Tovar, left, Courtney Chamness and Savannah Eren were recently presented with dictionaries by members of the Kiwanis Club of Allen.

During the 2008-09 school year, the club provided every third-grader in the Allen and Lovejoy school districts with a Webster’s Dictionary for students, amounting to more than 1,700 books.

Teams of volunteers visited the 16 elementary schools in the districts to present the books and conduct a brief lesson on how to use them.

Green Elementary’s Activating Inquisitive Minds students in fourth, fifth and sixth grade, like (pictured from left) Emma Voohries, Rachel Frick, Blake Vilven and Monica Bissmeyer, participated in alternative energy projects throughout the week leading up to Earth Day on April 22.
