Gardening and recycling musings with occasional tidbits about dogs.

My husband, Tom (…hmmm - no, not related to Tommy) and I, went to see this production at the DallasTheaterCenter Sunday afternoon.  It only took us 16 minutes to drive there – another great thing about living in Irving!

What can I say?  It was wonderful!  I knew the music would be outstanding and I had read that the set was interesting, but the excellent dancing was a pleasant surprise. We’d been told it was loud and had come prepared with ear plugs, but it was actually just right.  Loud, but not too loud and not at all painful.  The best thing was that the lyrics were understandable.

Ah, back to school time! Of course, that should mean the end of the summer, but that’s not quite how it works any more.  For me, a school librarian, back to school is August 13th, which I’m pretty sure is still summer.  At least it feels like summer.

Every year, I try to take something new back to school.  Last year, I took a new book shelf, made to look like the Magic Tree House (it even has a little rope ladder), and a small harp.  This year I am going back with a new rocking chair, decorated with pictures from classic children’s stories, and a millipede, which will be our new library pet.

Good news!  I found a local source for red wigglers as a result of my post on neighborsgo!  I just love it when things work out. The worms are at Grand Prairie’s Worm Farm, and I plan to go there and see them being divided on August 9th. They aren’t ready yet, but as soon as they are I’ll get some and start my own worm bin. I can use the time to get my container ready.  The owner of Grand Prairie’s Worm Farm, Vickie Sullivan, said I’ll need a 14 to 18 gallon plastic container with a lid, a pound and a half of shredded newspaper, and a pound of coconut fiber.  I’ve got lots of newspaper, but I’ll have to find out where to buy coconut fiber.

While I’m waiting for my worms, I decided to plant a fall garden. Of course, it is the hottest time of the year, and we all know nothing is going to grow in this heat without lots of water, mulch, and shade, but any plant that can make it through July and August will probably be a great producer when the weather cools.

Recently I was having lunch at Whole Foods Market (where I found the cutest grocery bags – they say “I used to be a plastic bottle” and they are quite colorful and cheerful) and I noticed that they were set up to recycle not just the paper, plastic and metal, but the food scraps as well. There was a little sign telling about how the food scraps would be composted, which reminded me that I’ve always intended to try worm composting in one of my big bins, so I began my search for red wigglers –preferably free ones that I can acquire locally.
