That's the name my kids gave this 8-week-old, beautiful brindle Akita mix puppy that we are fostering until our neighbor, who rescues dogs, can place him in a permanent home.
After two short weeks, Toby (or "Tobias Tank" as the kids also call him) is already bonding with our other pets and making himself at home. He knows where the basket of dog toys are on the fireplace hearth, and he crawls into the basket and pulls out his squeakers of choice. It's funny, but he often prefers to play with the cat and the cat toys.
We have a ShihTzu, a Boxer, a cat, a rabbit and a hamster - and Toby plays with them all. We immediately fell in love with Toby. We considered keeping him, but Akitas can grow to 80-130 pounds, and we have a pretty full house already. Our Boxer, Samson, has advanced mast cell cancer and needs a lot of medical and emotional attention. And our Shih Tzu, Gigi, has decided to start going to the bathroom on the carpet - just so we can blame it on the new visitor.
Akitas are fiercely loyal and protective dogs, and their size and reputation can often land them in the hands of someone who doesn't understand the breed or who puts the dog in an abusive situation...they end up back in shelters or in situations that can be harmful to the dog. Akitas are also sweet, loving, huggable, smart and beautiful - and although they are big and active, they are best as indoor house dogs where they thrive on human companionship. Toby may not be a pure Akita; the vet believes he may be mixed with Boxer.
If you are interested in opening up your heart and your home to Toby, he will give you lots of hugs and kisses and be your best friend.
