The Anderson family hosted a 50-cent lemonade/hot chocolate/brownie stand at the corner of N. Lakeshore Drive and North Hills in Rockwall March 1, to raise money for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Twelve-year-old Mary Kate Anderson is a leukemia survivor.

Remember Cricket, the fast-footed Chihuahua from Rowlett? Meet his canine cousin, Spy, who skateboards.

BTW, trainer Pam Martin says Cricket and Spy are great friends; they hang out together, swimming and training. Pam says Cricket is trying to get back into shape after gaining weight over the holidays.

Maybe you’ve engaged in brief philosophical discussion with this guy, Scott Gill, as this part-time barista and father of four prepared your skinny latte from behind the counter at the Rockwall Starbucks.

Or maybe you’re reading about his battle with a 4-foot-long leopard shark in the recently released Chicken Soup for the Father and Son’s Soul.

Scott Gill is also one of my favorite neighborsgo columnists whose slice of life stories keep me laughing and thinking. This time he stirs the soul with an endearing account of what happened last week at the Starbucks on Ridge Road...

Clayton Basye is a ham radio operator here in Rockwall. I had the pleasure of meeting him and other members of the Rockwall County Amateur Radio Club over ice cream at Culver's. They are really an interesting bunch, and they are the ones to count on when other forms of communication fail in times of natural or manmade disaster.

Clayton asked me to spread the word about a Severe Storm Spotter training program that will be presented from 7 to 9 pm this Thursday (March 13) at the Rockwall ISD administration building. It's co-sponsored by the Rockwall Emergency Management Office and the Rockwall County Amateur Radio Emergency Services, and it is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about storm spotting.

Cruise on over to WineStyles in Rowlett for a car show and charity wine tasting this Saturday. Hot Rod wines and Elvis Presley wines from Graceland Cellars will accompany oldies music and a collection of antique and classic cars.

The event is free, but donations are being accepted to stock the food pantry at First Christian Church-Rowlett. See WineStyle owner Martha Lloyd's story for more details.

Wish my dad could go with me. He restored a 57 Chevy once, and used to take me out for ice cream in it on sunny days.

Michael Kitkoski just posted a video update and the latest news on Marble, a homeless Gordon Setter that was previously featured on neighborsgo.com and in our print edition.

Michael writes, "...he’s well-behaved and friendly and he performs beautifully on a leash. His piercing marble-like eyes sparkle with intelligence. Marble is too good of a dog to suffer such a cruel fate. "

If you have room in your home (and your heart), call Rockwall Animal Services at 972-771-7750.

Nancy Belew with the Aggie Moms and Rockwall County A&M Clubs just let me know that the Aggie Moms will be headed out to the Cotton Patch Cafe in Rockwall tonight for a high-spirited Idol watching party.

They'll have their cell phones ready to vote for our favorite music man, Jason Castro, who has made it to the top 8 male performers. (Jason is an Aggie, studying architecture, in case you didn't know!)

Why not drop by the Cotton Patch - it's brand to Rockwall, right across from Buffalo Wild Wings in front of Circuit City - and vote for our hometown hopeful!

This week's editor's note is written by East Zone assistant editor Aly Fleet. You'll find it in the March 1 print edition of neighborsgo.

Aly writes: Although I’ve only been on the neighborsgo team a mere two months, I sure have a lot to show for it. I’ve been putting out videos left and right, and many of them focus on the Rockwall/Rowlett area.

First there was “Know Your Neighbor: Angie Landers.” I caught up with the winner of last year’s Rockwall Idol, Angie Landers. She told me what she’s been up to since winning and what she’ll being doing to help out with this year’s competition. Check out the video at neighborsgo.com/video/584.
