The troop met last night to start the process of deciding on a project for their Girl Scout Silver Award.  Keeping the girls on a track of creativity, while keeping them grounded in reality, was a fine line.  (more)

This has nothing to do with the Girl Scout Troop, though I have had the Girl Scouts over when my daughter was in scouts to learn how to make gingerbread houses.  You'll have to look closely to see the lights on the fenceline.  Enjoy the pictures, or visit the Richardson Senior Citizen Center at Arapaho & Westshore to see the actual house.

During her year abroad in Germany as an exchange student her senior year of high school, Alison Beatty acquired an interest in the architecture of the region.  When I told her I made gingerbread houses to donate to the Senior Citizen Center, she expressed quite an interest in learning how to make one.  So began her 25 hour lesson.

Every once in a while in life you get the chance to meet someone that really makes an impression on you.  This year, I have been blessed with two such young ladies from UTD, who are helping me lead an eighth grade Girl Scout troop.  Alison Beatty and Christina May are energetic and very much a link between the girls and parents.

On Wednesday, Nov. 19th, I got the following email from one of the families in my Girl Scout troop:

"Yesterday while I was at work and the girls were at school, someone entered our house and stole a lot of things including passports, social security cards, birth certificates for all three of us. They stole everything that Nikki got for her 18th birthday last week from friends and family.

This year's First Timer's Camp for new Girl Scouts was a big success.  Girl Scout Troop 3226, consisting of 8th grade girls from North Jr. High and West Jr. High, held their 3rd annual camp for girls new to Girl Scouting in the Richardson area.  Approximately 60 girls in grades K - 2 attended the camp.  An additional 30 adults also attended so they could see the kinds of activities girls may experience at a typical Girl Scout campout.

One of the things the girls in the troop do every year is host a First Timer's Camp.  This camp is designed for girls who have just joined Girl Scouting and have never gone to camp before.  It is held inside, so weather is not a concern.

Some people say I'm crazy to be a Girl Scout leader, when I don't have a daughter in the troop. (My daughter is grown & married).  They may be right.  The girls' 7th and 8th grade years have presented challenges I didn't experience with my own daughter.
