Mockingbird Elementary kicked off their Ponytail Club to benefit the Pink Heart Funds at their end-of-year awards assembly on Tuesday, June 3. Eight students, a 4 year old and one teacher cut their hair during the assembly. This event at Mockingbird was initiated largely because of the heart for others demonstrated by Julia Stephenson, a soon to be 5th grader at Mockingbird. Julia has previously made three other hair donations to the Locks of Love. This hair donation to the Pink Heart Funds will be her fourth pony tail donation.
Twelve additional students have committed to cut their hair by next year's end-of-year assembly. Pony tails donated will provide wigs for children at no cost to them, through the Pink Heart Funds, founded by JoAn Niceley. (www.pinkheartfunds.com). Peggy Taylor, a Mockingbird first grade teacher, is the contact person at Mockingbird Elementary for the Pony Tail Club. [ptaylor@coppellisd.com] Contact her if you would like to learn more about sharing your hair and joining the Pony Tail Club. A Mockingbird goal of 100 inches has been set for next year.
The Pink Heart Funds is very supportive of Locks of Love but the difference with this group is their focus is for children who are going through chemo and have lost their hair and do not have the means to afford a wig. This organization provides a wig, free of charge to these special children. This non profit organization provides the pony tails at no cost to the wig manufacturer to be made into wigs for kids receiving chemo. The wig manufacturer charges Pink Heart Funds only for the labor to make the wigs. . ALL Pink Heart Funds profit goes toward paying for the wigs.
JoAn Niceley, the founder of Pink Hearts Funds, lives and runs this organization from Mississippi. She accepts pony tail donations of eight (8) inches or more. The only hair that she can not accept is bleached hair. The hair must be all one length. She will use the hair to get FREE wigs for children. No child will be turned down that has hair loss due to cancer or other medical conditions unless their insurance covers it.
There is a location in Lewisville that is the designated drop off location for Pink Heart pony tails. It is called “Wiggin'Out” and it is located on Main Street & Edmonds. Cheryll Fiorendino & Angie Prince at “Wiggin Out" work with JoAn at the Pink Heart Funds.
