About Me
My Interests:
Me in My Words: I'm 29 going on 100 on some days. I also fib about my age:). I'm married with three kids. AND I have a really sick sense of humor which serves me well.
Interests: reading, watching the news, and I'm sure I should list more but can't think of any; oh yeah, my hippie mobile (yellow slug bug)
Favorite Sports Teams: probably will be the middle school sports teams since Elizabeth is on the dance team and Heath is in band; otherwise, not a sports person
Interesting things for other users to know: Heath says I'm weird.
I've eaten McDonald's on three continents; although, I'm not sure I should brag about that:).
I love to travel and hope to do more once the kids have graduated High School.
Favorite Movies: Musicals, Forrest Gump, Strictly Ballroom, Paint Your Wagon, and so many more. Heath says basically old old old movies; although, I do like the Harry Potter movies, except number two--liked the books better though.
Favorite TV Shows: Lonesome Dove, Cheers, ER, Lost, Desperate Housewives, Dancing with the Stars, American Idol, and WWE Smackdown the last five minutes because it is so funny and ludicrous, and ABC World news
Favorite Web site: thegrocerygame.com
Years in the D-FW area: 15+

Bipolar Child - March 25, 2008 - 08:42 PM
I can relate, as I too have a bipolar child. She was diagnosed with ADHD at age 5, ODD at age 8 and Bipolar when she was 9. We tried to handle it without medication but it was impossible. She has been on more drugs than I can count. At one time the doctors had her on 7 different drugs and was wanting to add another (that's when I put a stop to it). She has been in Timberlawn Hospital numerous times and was in Childrens Medical Center for a 45 day stint. I understand the "MELT DOWNS". She has body slamed herself against the furniture, knocked holes in the walls and tried to stab herself, just to name a few things. I'm not crazy about the commercials either, however, I have to give Abilify a thumbs up. It's not a miracle drug by any means, but it has made a difference. Her melt downs are not as frequent or as sever as in the past. My heart goes out to anyone trying to raise a mentally challanged child. As a parent it's difficult having to set back and watch your child go through this pain and knowing there's nothing you can do to stop it or fix it. I've shed a river of tears and had many sleepless nights but I wouldn't trade it or change a thing. She truley is the joy of my life. Good luck.

A cool drink of water in the Mojave - April 30, 2008 - 10:18 AM
I have a 9 yr old (Reece) who is bipolar, ADHD and ODD. He was diagnosed at 4 after we discovered issues we needed help with at the age of 2. It is a disease that runs in my family (my mom and sister). I can completely relate to the frustrations, triumphs and trials you experience with not only Health but his interaction with his siblings (Reece has an older sister) as well as flashbacks or relevance with your sister and the affect Bipolar has had on your relationship. Your blogs are like a drink of water as i travel a dry climate of misunderstanding, judgment, lack of empathy and just plain stupidity. I concur I would never wish this battle on anyone yet i know that the bright spots we do experience with Reece I wouldnt trade for the world either. Keep writing...I am listening and learning and walking the path with you. Many Hugs... Laura
