Hoop D-Do II Basketball Tournament - July 31, 2008 - 04:44 PM
Dallas may have lost Hoop It Up, but there is still a Hoop-D-Do II By Sharon Beechum Dallas (Oak Cliff), Texas - Whatever happened to the scorching hot days of 3-on-3 basketball in the streets of West End? Remember in June of 1987 when (500) five hundred 3-on-3 basketball teams played in Hoop-D-Do in the streets of Dallas’ West End. The 1987 Dallas Morning News/D magazine West End Hoop-D-Do basketball competition was a two-day event of street basketball on seventy-five half-courts set up in the historic West End. Although Dallas lost Hoop It Up to the Ballpark in Arlington, there is still a Hoop-D-Do II. The venue has changed and the name, but the game is still played the same. Kommunities Kan Kampaign, a non-profit community improvement organization, hosted the 1st Annual Hoop-D-Do II celebration along with more than 20 sponsors in the Southwest (Redbird) area. The Juneteenth (June 19th) holiday was celebrated with 3-on-3 basketball, food, fun and a live performance by Rapper Cutta C at the Oak Cliff Family YMCA. Although the outdoor event was rained out, 7 teams showed on time, ready to play. Teams from Red Oak, Highland Hills, Mooreland YMCA, Thurgood Marshall Recreation Center, Singing Hills Recreation Center, Ric’s Total Package and Cliff Park Village played indoors on (3) three half-courts. The winners of the tournament Dequall Wynn, Darion Hancock, J. Toni and A.D. from Singing Hills Recreation Center took home a cash prize of $150.00. Thanks to everyone that came out for this event - our players, fans and volunteers. And a special thank you to all of our sponsors.
