(Addison, Texas) -- The best middle school, high school and university jazz programs from across the nation have been announced for this year’s eighth annual North Texas Jazz Festival in Addison, Texas, April 2-4.  A collaborative effort of the University of North Texas Jazz Studies and The Town of Addison, the three-day festival showcases emerging jazz musical talent including UNT ensembles, headlining acts and outstanding bands.  The event concludes Friday night with a special concert including a performance byone of the most dynamic artists in the jazz world today, David Binney. This year’s bands from DFW include: Arlington, Austin, Dallas, Farmers Branch, Fort Worth and Garland.

Each year schools throughout the U.S. are invited to submit audition tapes featuring their big bands, vocal groups and combos to be selected for participation in the festival.  The chosen groups are then evaluated by adjudicators, a prestigious panel of professional jazz musicians and music educators.  Student performances are Thursday, April 2 and Friday, April 3, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and are free and open to the public.

Performers selected as “outstandingare invited to appear on stage, along with jazz greats, as a part of the event’s evening concerts.  Wednesday’s concert includes a special private performance from the Two O’Clock Lab Band.  The North Texas Jazz Singers, directed by Paris Rutherford and the One O’Clock Lab Band, directed by Neil Slater will perform Thursday evening. Jazz saxophonist David Binney will perform on Friday night as part of the event’s finale.

While the evening concerts are exclusive to the festival attendees, the public is invited to participate in several activities throughout the North Texas Jazz Festival. On Friday, April 4, David Binney will present a special Q&A session from the Crowne Plaza Hotel from 12:15 – 1:15 pm.  Throughout the entire festival, the public is invited to attend any of the school performances from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.  Additionally, noted jazz film collector Hal Miller will be presenting rare jazz films from his personal archive and interacting with attendees.
