The 2008 Mesquite Relay for life recently held it's Kick-off event at the Mesquite main Library on Jan. 31st.
With a room-filled audience, chairperson Shirley Roberts, members of the Relay committee, survivors of cancer, and elected officials came together to set a course for success for this year's Relay.
Mrs. Roberts spoke on how this year's Mesquite Relay will be a great event and that everyone involved has been working very hard in preparation for it. One Survivor George, spoke about his experience with battling cancer, and his grattitude toward all assemble in the undertaking of this project.
Mayor John Monaco was also on hand for the ceremony, as was American Cancer Society staff member Brandy Ammons. Mrs. Ammons expressed her excitement and satisfaction, about how well plans for the Relay have progressed so far. Mayor Monaco spoke of what an honor it is for Mesquite and its residents to be involved with such a worthy endeavor. Monaco then presented Mrs. Ammons and Chairperson Roberts with a proclamation declaring January 31, 2008 Relay for Life day in the city of Mesquite.
The Relay for Life is a fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. It is an overnight event designed to spread awareness of cancer prevention, treatments, cures, and to celebrate survivorship as well as raise money for research to find more cures . Relay For Life is the world's largest fundraiser.
In 2007, Relay For Life had raised over $405 million worldwide.
The 2008 Mesquite Relay for life will be held May 2nd - 3rd at Berry Middle
School in here in Mesquite.
