McKinney, TX (02/28) – Collin County Committee on Aging (CCCoA) announced today that they will be holding Mayors for Meals Day as a part of their March for Meals campaign. Eight mayors from eight cities in Collin County will be participating in the event to show their support for community seniors.
Particpating Mayors: McKinney Mayor Bill Whitfield, Frisco Mayor Mike Simpson, Melissa Mayor David Dorman, Plano Mayor Pat Evans, Prosper Mayor Charles Niswanger, Anna Mayor Kenneth Pelham, Farmersville Mayor Donald C. Smith and Allen Mayor Steve Terrell.
CCCoA’s Mayors for Meals event will include city mayors along with volunteers from the CCCoA Meals on Wheels program. “We are very excited about having so many mayors participate in this event. We hope to raise awareness about senior hunger in our community” said Marilyn Stidham, Executive Director of CCCoA. “Several Collin County mayors have been involved with our program in the past, and the national Mayors for Meals Day is an excellent way to continue our relationship.”
March for Meals is a national campaign, in which CCCoA is a participant, to raise awareness and to encourage action on the part of the local community. Mayors for Meals Day will be March 19, 2008. On this designated day American mayors across the country will show their support for Meals on Wheels by visiting with local seniors and delivering their meals.
CCCoA provides more than 1000 meals daily to seniors in our county who would not have access to adequate nutrition without the Meals on Wheels program. The agency seeks to fight the isolation many seniors face when sequestered away from the community due to frailties associated with aging and disability. “The number of clients participating in our program increases on a weekly basis. The need is there. We are so grateful to our mayors who recognize this problem and are doing what they can to help.”
