Ceramic Students participate in Empty Bowls Project

0 Ratings / 0 Comments

On February 22, 2008, the Ceramics classes at Centennial High School participated in the Dallas Empty Bowl Project.  Empty Bowls began in 1990 in Michigan when an art teacher had his students create ceramic bowls.  For a small donation to a local food bank, the faculty and staff recieved soup, bread and a one of a kind bowl.  By the next year the project had grown and is now an international event.  Students and professional potters alike contribute hand crafted bowls to yearly lunches with all proceeds helping to combat hunger.

The Dallas Empty Bowl Lunch is held at the Meyerson Symphony Center.  Over 25 local restaurants provide soup, breads, and dessert, but the highlight of the event is always the bowls.  This year the lunch raised over $115,000 dollars for the North Texas Food Bank.

Each ceramic student at Centennial, under the direction of teacher Judy Birkes, created at least one bowl to donate and eight of the students attended the luncheon. The students loved the fact that they were able to contribute to such a worthy cause.
