Frisco Celebrates African American Program

0 Ratings / 0 Comments

In February, Frisco residents gathered as the City of Frisco participated in the cities first annual African American History Celebration presented by Destiny’s Place Ministries.

The auditorium at CentennialHigh School was transformed into a cultural haven as residents, local business owners, and city officials took part in the program.  The theme of the event centered on embracing diversity and honoring the accomplishments and history of the African American community. The rich culture of the city was recognized as Pastor Arthur Maxwell was honored as the founder of HamiltonChapelBaptistChurch, Frisco’s first black church, along with Jimmy Jones, founder of Frisco’s first black school and historian. Other award recipients were, Frisco Thunder owner’s Jake and Vinita Reed, The City of Frisco, Frisco Chiropractic, Trinity Resource & Ministries Coaching, Farmer’s Insurance, Epitome Christian Magazine and Frisco Residents of Color.

The Dallas Black Dance Theater performed a beautiful expressive dance pulling the crowd to their feet. Cities officials commented on the need for such a program in Frisco. City Secretary, Nan Parker, addressed the crowd, “I’d like to believe the City of Frisco is becoming more and more color blind.” Mayor Simpson was not able to attend but sent Joy West, Deputy Mayor Pro Tem in his absence to read a letter written for the occasion stating, “We hope this becomes an annual event.” Police officials were on hand to discuss crime prevention and awareness as residents were encouraged to take part in programs like the Citizen’s PoliceAcademy.

Fox 4 News reporter, Shaun Rabb, inspired the crowd with an uplifting account of the contributions from Portia Taylor and Otis Spears. “Let’s not forget about our pioneers in Frisco. This is an historic occasion in Frisco. We need to understand that what other folk went through is why you are where you are today.” The crowd applauded wildly; encouraged by the passion and sincerity of Rabb’s message. Despite his many accomplishments Mr. Rabb has added a new one. In addition to being a reporter, he is also the pastor of NewLightChurch located in Dallas.

As organizer’s of the event, Rev. Mitchell of Destiny’s Place Ministries and his wife Lisa were pleased to see their vision for African American recognition fulfilled but looks forward to planning next years event. “We needed something to pull diversity in Frisco together. This is the start of something that will be consistent. What god said must be done is done.”
