Jewish Teens To Give $10,000 to Help Dallas Jewish Community
How would you use $10,000 to improve our Jewish community? That is a question that a group of Jewish teens in the Dallas area will be faced with in the fall. Dallas is home to one of 10 new programs across the country that aims to introduce the concept of tzedakah (the commandment to give) and all of its responsibilities to Jewish teens in grades 10 and 11 in academic year 2008-2009.
Participants in the Jewish Youth Tzedakah Foundation will serve on a board with 15-20 fellow teens. The board will examine the foundations of tzedakah and what Jewish tradition has to say about how one gives. The teens will look at various Jewish organizations in the local, national and international community and they will also take a look at how non-profit organizations work effectively.
Throughout the school year, they will work together to decide how to allocate funds that they have donated as part of their participation in this program. The donations from the teens will be matched by a local donor, so that the teens will have $10,000 to use in the Jewish community. The Jewish Youth Tzedakah Foundation will give teens great opportunities to work as part of a group, develop an understanding of the non-profit world and the needs of the world around them. Applications are available upon request, and are due April 14th.
This program is a project of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, and is generously funded by local donors and the Jewish Teen Funders Network. For more information or an application for the program, please contact Miranda Winer at (214) 239-7168, or email mwiner@jfgd.org.
