The Flower Mound Police Department will begin issuing citations on April 8 to drivers using hand-held cellular telephone devices while operating a motor vehicle within an active school zone. The ordinance was unanimously approved by the Town Council on February 4.
A public notification campaign is now underway to promote safety and compliance and to reduce any confusion prior to enforcement of the ordinance. As part of the campaign, the Police Department will issue warnings to drivers violating the ordinance beginning March 25 for ten school days unless a driver has previously been warned or is violating another traffic law simultaneously.
The intent of the cell phone ordinance is to help safeguard school-aged children in very busy school zones. Flower Mound Police ask that drivers consider the importance of a call while in a school zone as it only takes a few minutes to drive through the area.
