Concerned parents, staff and students of West Mesquite High School gathered quietly together in the West Mesquite High School parking lot Thursday night to honor Shaun Hebert.
Shaun, a 14-year-old West Mesquite student, went missing this week after being swept away by high water created by heavy rains. Authorities confirmed the body's identity late Thursday, according to a report.
Many of the people who joined hands didn't know each other. Some of them were band members who played along side Shaun. In the center of a large circle the group placed flowers and Shaun's band bag and prayed.
Words grieving students gave to describe Shaun were "spunky" and "friendly." Some even remembering how he "always wanted to make sure I had a good day."
Principal Keith Adams attended the memorial and said the school will have counselors on hand Monday to help students deal with this difficult time. He also said that the students "need time to reflect" and that band students and parents are "like a family."
Teens discussed wrapping the tree near the band hall with blue ribbons, working together to raise money and prepare food for the family, and finding a more permanent way to honor Shaun's memory.
There are plans for a candlelight vigil for Shaun at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the bottom of McWhorter Park.
