The Pullen PTA treated students of every grade to a very special surprise: a visit from the Fort Worth Children’s Opera. Four singers from the opera company performed Hansel and Gretel for the entire school on Thursday.
The week began with a special workshop where opera company members taught a selected number of students the songs and dances from the show. Students had the unique opportunity to perform in the opera before faculty members and peers.
PTA Arts and Education Chairperson Melissa Bailey expressed excitement on giving students the opportunity to experience something new.
“Many children at the elementary level have never experienced opera,” she said. “This seemed to be the perfect opportunity to expose our kids to something they may otherwise not get the chance to explore.”
Additionally, students got a general overview of vocal categories, the history of opera, and the proper way an audience shows their enthusiasm during an operatic performance.
“The best way to show one’s appreciation after a song is sung or scene is over, is to call out ‘Bravo’,” said opera singer Brandi Icord.
Opera members strategically held up a “Bravo” sign during the performance to help encourage students to participate at the appropriate times.
“I am so thrilled,” said Music Teacher Sarah Hearn. “Exposing children to many different types of music broadens their appreciation for the Arts.”
“I really enjoyed it,” said Pullen Principal Renee Demianovich. ““I loved watching the kids even more than the opera.”
