NorthLakeArt Students Raise Money for
Injured Nepalese Student
The North Lake College Art Club organized a silent auction of art work by students and art faculty to raise money for student Raj Silwal from Nepal, who was initially injured in an automobile crash. The silent auction ran from March 4-7, and 17-20. Over $2500 was raised to help Raj with his medical expenses.
When Raj Silwal was injured in the accident, he was taken to Parkland hospital, where, during the trauma evaluation, doctors discovered a brain tumor. He was in the hospital for several days before the Nepalese Society of Texas was contacted. NorthLake art student Kapil Dixit is a member of the society and learned about the plight of his fellow student.
Kapil enlisted the help of Bridget Talley, friend and President of the Art Club, to help him with a project to raise money for Raj’s medical expenses. With the help of North Lake Gallery Director Steven Benezue and Marty Ray, Art Program Director, a silent auction was organized. Students and art faculty freely donated works to the auction, and “House of Colors,” a gallery in Grapevine also donated a piece of work.As Kapil Dixit said, “I wanted to do something for him (although Kapil did not know Raj) as he is so far from home.” NorthLake has over 800 international students, a large number are from Nepal. Raj is from a small village and his father is a farmer. Enough money was donated to pay for his father to travel to Dallas to be with his son. He has successfully undergone surgery to remove the tumor and is now undergoing further treatment at Parkland.
