NFL Player visits SGHS AVID students
Mr. Kenyon Coleman, a NFL player for the New York Jets, visited the AVID class at SouthGarlandHigh School on February 12, 2008. Coleman, a defensive end player, talked to the AVID students about the inspiration he received from RESH 180, (a program designed to help individuals find their purpose in life). He explained how much hard work, sacrifice, and dedication he had put into what he is today. He told the students how people would give him put downs, lowered his self-esteem saying that the chances of him being an NFL player were very low. He never thought the 30 minutes he spent working out every day would actually help improve himself to one day be in the NFL. Therefore, he told the students to never give up on their dreams and always do their best. “Baby steps are the key to success,” Coleman said. “I thought he was a very excellent speaker that inspired me to conquer my goals!” Jasmine Simpson exclaimed. “He inspired me to keep dreaming and to reach my goals,” Christopher Clavijo said. This is what several AVID students said about how Mr. Coleman inspired them. He left the kids with admiration and positive attitude towards the future. This was an inspiring, fun experience that the AVID students of SouthGarlandHigh School had.
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, a program designed to coach young adults to receive the opportunity to go to college and have a plan for a successful future.
