Women's League supports neighborhood heroes

1 Rating / 0 Comments

Lake Highlands Women’s League members prepared homemade baked goods to deliver to police and fire personnel in the neighborhood.  “What a nice surprise!” said firefighter Drew Guthrie, who received the goodies at the firestation at Audelia and Skillman. “We appreciate this special treat.”

“It will be difficult,” added D.D. Pierce, “but we promise to leave some for the next two shifts. We are grateful to have the support of the community.”

“Lake Highlands is like a small town,” stressed Women’s League president Terri Hawkins. “We consider these firemen and police officers as part of our families.”

“These gentlemen came to help me when I smelled smoke in my kitchen,” said league member Linda Smith. “It turned out to be just a burned out light fixture, but they were wonderful to help. Baking brownies was the least I could do to properly thank them. Another time, they retrieved my cell phone, which fell out of my car into a drainage ditch. They came to my rescue.”

“These desserts are sinful,” joked Anita Bassinger, who works at the Northeast Police substation. “I think I’ll have two.”

“When we arrived at the Greenville Avenue firestation to deliver our goodies,” remembered Michelle Dishman, “the firefighters were out doing what they do, serving our community. We enjoyed providing a nice homemade treat for the heroes of our community to enjoy when they returned.” League member Jennifer White agreed. “We can never say thank you enough to these men and women who protect our families.”

The Lake Highlands Women's League donates more than 1000 volunteer hours in the community annually. They will give away more than $160,000 in college scholarships and community projects this year. More information is available at www.lhwl.org.
