0 Ratings / 0 Comments

The next series of DivorceCare classes for adults and DC4K for children begins Tuesday, April 29 at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church (PHPC). The cost of the 13-week course is just $40 and scholarships are available. Anyone who is experiencing the pain of divorce is invited to attend. Our DivorceCare facilitators are a friendly, caring group of people who will walk alongside you through one of life’s most difficult experiences.

The week after Christmas, a good friend of mine called me to explain that her church, PHPC, was offering a class for those going through divorce.  It was to start the day after we returned from vacation, and “by the way”, there would be a class for my kids.  She knew the kids’ class leaders personally, and knew without a doubt we needed to be there—all of us, on Tuesday January 8, 2008.  I was not so sure, and could not decide if we needed yet another school night activity, but I believed that she believed, and so we showed up.

I could write a whole novel on how I have benefited from Divorce Care, how connected and normal and loved I now feel, where I felt none of those things in January, only that’s not what I was asked to write.  The leaders of DC4K (that’s Divorce Care for Kids, in case you were wondering) asked me to give my impressions of what I thought it meant for my children, and it has taken me a week to get to where I can put that down on paper.  They have a place where they can cry, be angry, and pray— for their father and me and for themselves.  Our discussions on the way home on those nights have not always been pleasant or easy for any of us—DC4K is not about denial.  What it is about is them—their feelings, their process.  On Tuesday nights, my children are supported in ways that I cannot support them, because I am going through so many of the same feelings they are.  The leaders in DC4K know how to talk to my children, how to let them know that they are understood and that everything they are going through is normal.  Together we learned a new vocabulary and a new way to approach each other about the divorce.

I think I knew we stumbled on something special at the end of the first night.  I went to pick them up at the classroom, and heard something I had not heard in too many weeks to count—my children, laughing like the kids they were, with free and joyful hearts.  No matter how tired I am, how much homework they have, or how many drive thru meals we have had to eat for the last 13 weeks, it just does not matter.  I think about that laughter and I keep coming back.
