Davy Crockett, The Alamo and Rockwall Street Names
The Rockwall County Historical Foundation (RCHF) featured a special guest at the April meeting of its Brown Bag Lecture Series. Davy Crockett, (aka Richard Cantrell, local historian) told of his adventures as a boy in Tennessee, political activities in Washington and his final days at the Alamo. Davy Crockett was dressed and armed with replicas of the clothing and weapons of the early 1800's.
Davy/Richard explained the background of other heroes and battles of the War for Texas Independence for whom so many of the streets of Rockwall are named e.g. Rusk, San Jacinto, Fannin, Goliad, and Alamo.
Carolyn Francisco then told how other streets got their names from some of the important Rockwall residents e.g.. Boydston, Parks, Glenn, and Heath.
The next lecture in the Brown Bag Series will be presented Friday, May 9th by David Peek, owner and editor of the Rockwall County Enterprise ~Success. David will discuss area news coverage and what made the headlines in years past.
All Brown Bag Lectures are free and open to the public. They are held the 2nd Friday of the month during the school year at noon in The historic Courthouse on the square. There are no lectures during the summer months.
