McKinney celebrates Arbor Day with tree planting, neighborhood clean-up
City of McKinney staff members are working with volunteers to celebrate Arbor Day and make spring cleaning a breeze for citizens.
On April 19, the McKinney Community Development and Public Works departments will put on the Rebuilding Neighborhoods Clean-Up event. Dumpsters will be available from 7:30 a.m. until noon for residents to throw away their trash or debris. Several volunteer groups are also hosting their own community clean-up events. The morning activities culminate in a volunteer celebration lunch at noon at OldSettlersPark, 1201 E. Louisiana
This is also the site and time for the 6th annual Arbor Day celebration, which includes a ceremonial tree planting and presentation by city officials. City Arborist Emily Braht will award the grand prize poster winner of the Arbor Day poster contest. Each of the five schools that participated in the poster contest will also have a winner.
The poster contest was open to all elementary school students. The city received about 240 entries. The grand prize winner will receive:
- Their design featured on arbor day t-shirts and all other promotional materials
- Official recognition during the event on April 19
- Tickets to a Texas Rangers game and Dallas Desperados game.
This year's Arbor Day celebration in McKinney was made possible thanks to the following sponsors: Pogue Engineering and Development Company, Sanchez and Associates, Tucker-David Foundation, C&C Development, Lacy Construction, Cross Engineering, Heritage Land Bank, Milstead Team, Texas Rangers, Dallas Desperados, Hey! Look! Promotions, Medical Center of McKinney, McKinney Convention and Visitors Bureau, Fannin Tree Farm, Chambersville Tree Farm, Calloway’s Nursery, and Shades of Green.
“We had a remarkable showing of generosity from these sponsors. Without them, this year’s Arbor Day festivities would not have been possible,” said Senior Planner Michael Quint.
For its community forestry management efforts, McKinney has been designated a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
