On April 12th, a whole bunch of Lake Highlands neighbors (now known as 'Plot Holders') came out to celebrate - and work - the first Lake Highlands Community Garden at Goforth and White Rock Trail. This plot of land was transformed over the short course of two weeks from a barren lot to a lush landscape.
On hand to officially 'open' the garden was Councilman Jerry Allen, other good City folks, and representatives from Scott's Miracle-Gro. These were the people largely responsible for the LH Community Garden actually coming to be. Them, and organizer A.L. Nickerson. Short speeches were made and lots of thanks and congratulations were passed around. And a committment to create a second Community Garden was given.
It was a day of hard work for all ages: The children of plot holders who came to help - they had hula hoops and frisbees to contend with; the Art Camp students who gathered materials on site and created an improvisational Community Garden sculpture under the guidance of teachers Amelia Natanson and Christina Van Hamersveld; the student volunteers who willingly went from plot to plot asking, ‘What can I help you with?’
Also on hand, working very, very hard, were neighborsgo Editors Jocelyn Delgado and Emily Goldstein, willingly (so they say) digging and churning my own personal plot, known as 'Pairadise'. Ladies, thanks for making a huge difference in the workload - and being so much fun! What are you doing NEXT Saturday?
What a difference a day makes - the Lake Highlands Community Garden actually looks like a garden now. And it is evolving into a true Community of good folks.
