WORKS BY LOCAL ARTISTS CONNECT CHURCH AND COMMUNITY

DALLAS, TX (April 17, 2008)  - Park Cities Presbyterian Church (PCPC) presented its second annual juried exhibition in April 2008.  The show took place at Gables Villa Rosa.  Proceeds from the show and art sale benefited WestDallasCommunitySchool after-school arts programs and Mercy Street Ministry.

"The PCPC exhibition was a great opportunity to allow artists to explore and express their faith artistically.  It is easy to see that the purpose for this organization is to simply reunite the liturgical and artistic realms through beautiful artwork,” said David Gappa, one of this year’s winning artists.

The theme of the art festival was “Beginnings” and all works fell into one of four categories:

·         Theme 1:  Beginnings of Creation, the seven days when God creates heaven and earth

·         Theme 2:  Beginnings of Man and Woman,God's creation of man and woman with His plan and purpose for mankind

·         Theme 3:  Temptation and Fall, the origins of temptation and sin that lead to the fall of mankind

·         Theme 4:  Judgment and Hope, the consequences of sin, the separation from God, and the subsequent search for hope

Artist Susan Scott’s painting was recognized as winner in Theme 1.  Her high gloss, brightly colored painting titled Cosmos was herinterpretation of “God's incredible creative power and overwhelming energy.”

Glass blower David Gappa’s sweeping earth blue sculpture was recognized in Theme 2 and represented the creation of man. “As the freshly mounded earth is gradually formed upward, the Spirit of God sweeps through the earth and breathes life into his newly created vessel,” said Gappa.

Photographer Christy Lafferty was recognized in Theme 3 for her photo titled Beautiful Hope.  Through the life and death of our daughter, Isabella Hope, I have known the indescribable beauty of beginnings. I have experienced the ultimate consequence of living in a fallen world when we buried her. And I've known not only the search for hope, but the joyful surprise of finding it in grief. This was the image I saw through my lens just minutes before her funeral as her Daddy held her precious body. I know that Bella is being held by her Heavenly Father now,” said Lafferty.

Theme 4 winning honors went to artist Peg Rosenlund for her brightly colored mixed media abstract design.  “Temptation comes in many forms, but it is always easier to blame someone else for the problem, as did Adam and Eve,” Rosenlund says of her work, which represents the apple in the Garden of Eden.

Jurors for the show were Patricia Meadows, curator and collection manager of the Texas Sculpture Garden; Dr. Ted Pillsbury, internationally known scholar, former Kimbell Art Museum director, chairman of Fine Arts for Heritage Auction Galleries of Dallas; and Dr. Pete Deison, founder of PCPC Arts Festival, pastor, author and educator.

"PCPC sees the encouragement of excellent art as a wonderful way to build community and good neighbors.  Art at its best expresses goodness, truth and beauty,” said Dr. Deison.  “Those are values that make a community like Uptown and Dallas great."

"Being a part of the community has always been important to Gables Residential," said Doug Chesnut, Gables senior vice president. "And community partnerships are equally important and rewarding. Gables Villa Rosa offered a very central and high-traffic location to showcase the PCPC Arts Festival. By exposing more people to these works, we believe we showcased local artists to a wider audience, thereby increasing support to two very worthy West Dallas organizations."
