The original order of Knights Templar was given Papal recognition in the 12th century. The knights were defenders of the church, protecting European pilgrims on their journeys to the Holy Land until the order was disbanded in the 14th century. The modern order of Knights Templar was established in the 19th century within the membership of the Masonic Lodge. This order is active in many charitable and humanitarian activities, and its members come from all walks of life.
As a Christian-based fraternal organization, the knights attend worship services together throughout the year at several churches around the city. On Ascension Sunday, May 4th, 2008, the Cathedral Church of Saint Matthew welcomes them to the 10:30 service. The knights will enjoy a full breakfast, and then will be greeted by vergers who will escort them into the church for mass.
The Cathedral Church of Saint Matthew is at 5100 Ross Avenue, at the corner of Ross and Henderson.
