Richardson Woman’s Club Announces 2008-2009 Scholarship Winners

Eight scholarship winners and their parents were honored by the Woman’s Club at the May 1, luncheon meeting held at The Northwood Club.  The students were awarded scholarships of $3,000.  To be eligible seniors must be graduating from a RISD high school or live in Richardson and go to a high school in Plano.  Students must also be planning to attend a college or university in the state system.  As always, the Philanthropy Committee had a difficult time deciding among numerous, well qualified, applicants.  Students fill out an application, write an essay and have a personal interview with the committee members before the decisions are made.  The Club’s four-year, Novella Bailey, scholarship was awarded last year to Torrey Tear of Richardson HS.  This year’s winners all expressed their thanks for being selected, and told the group a little about their hopes and dreams for their futures.

Kristi Scales of the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network was the guest speaker for the luncheon.  Kristi won a Woman’s Club scholarship in 1985 to attend Texas A&M.  She was the first recipient from Lake Highlands HS, and the councilor there who encouraged her to apply was club member, Kitty Brown.  Kitty is still an active member and introduced Kristi to this year’s winners, their parents and club members.  Kristi gave an inspirational and encouraging speech.
