Celebrates "Cinco de Mayo"
SpringPark Homeowners Association sponsored the 9th annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration as a First Friday social on Friday, May 2nd with 136 guests (98 adults and 38 children) attending.
Some of the PR work to entice neighbors to attend were the marque sign, articles in the SpringPark newsletter , e-mail reminder from communications@springpark.org (thanks to Curtis Rock), 11 small signs posted around the neighborhood put out by Ashley and John Foster and also articles and past photos in the "Garland Neighbors" and "Richardson Neighbors" sections of the Dallas Morning News!
Desperados catered the event and the food as usual was outstanding. The menu included beef & chicken fajitas, tacos, rice & beans, and all the fixings with cookies and special cinnamon treats for dessert. Thanks to Desperados for having servers from their restaurant.
The decorating committee included Carol Goings, Pam Bearden, Holly Dorantes , Liz (aka Bettye) Laesch, Carolyn Trundle, Martha Giles, Gwen & Robert Austin, Ashley Foster, and Ken & Sylvia Cohen,
The club house was decorated with brightly colored lights, lots of colorful piñatas, and many other festive decorations. The tables were decorated with luminaries and different colored tablecloths, which all contributed to making the evening very special. It was a beautiful night, so there were lots of guests enjoying the nice weather and visiting with friends and neighbors.
Also thanks to Ashley & John Foster, Gwen & Robert Austin and Cindy Carter who all took shifts in manning the front desk to check off reservations and hand out name tags. A special thanks to Will Scott who was available to supervise tennis activities planned for the kids.
Cindy and Jim Carter were in charge of the children's games and Janette Rivera helped. They played the traditional piñata game with candy treats awarded to all participants. There was also a children's movie,"Bee Movie" shown upstairs in the media room.
Ken Cohen of Cohen's Casino Parties donated the mini-casino, along with the dealers and trophies. There were "qualifying" rounds held at each of the three blackjack tables. The top 6 winners from these qualifying tournaments participated in a "Tournament of Champions", with separate contests for adults and children.
The top 3 adult winners from each contest took home a special engraved trophy and all of the 6 adult finalists were also awarded a certificate worth 2 night's free rooms at Sam's Town Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. The winners in the adult division were: 1st - Janet Rock, 2nd - Matt Nerbonne, and 3rd place -Karen McWhorter. Martha Giles was awarded a small horseshoe trophy for honorable mention and Liz Laesch and Sharon Doherty were the other two finalists. The winners in the children's division were: 1st - Ben Doherty, 2nd - Camryn Basile and 3rd - Tori Basile. Two smaller souvenir trophies with horseshoe tops were given for honorable mention to Brady Cameron and Alex Basile.
