Shelton School is the world’s largest private school for learning-different students
Dallas, Texas – May 12, 2008 – Pat and Emmitt Smith served as the honorary chairs of the April 12 Shelton School Stampede Benefit Auction, which raised the largest amount of funding in the auction’s 19-year history, $559,430. Shelton School, now in its 32nd year, is the largest private school in the world for students with learning differences such as dyslexia, ADHD, speech, and language disorders, serving pre-school through 12th grade.
The House of Blues served as the venue for the event which featured entertainment by HAUTE CHILE, a top Los Angeles dance party band. The evening included live and silent auctions as well as dinner. Stampede Auction Chairs were Charlotte Anderson, Shea Boscamp, Tracy Cheatham, Tami Delsanter, and Tanya Mendenhall.
Pat and Emmitt Smith donated a “Dancing with the Stars” package, with American Airlines tickets, and two exclusive seats to the filming as well as two nights at the Beverly Wilshire. Two packages were sold for $12,500 each. On the spur of the moment, Emmitt also threw in dinner! Emmitt also offered a “Round of Golf with Emmitt” at TPC Craig Ranch which sold for $6,000; and when someone else requested the same package at Dallas National, Emmitt agreed, and that sold for $10,000.
Charlotte Anderson, who served as one of the Stampede Auction co-chairs, was instrumental in the “Fly with the Dallas Cowboys” package for 2 people, to any ’08 away game including hotel, riding to game on team bus, pre-game sideline passes, and game tickets. This sold for $30,000. A second package to accommodate three people sold for $45,000.
A Walk On / Extra Part in “Nailed” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel, which sold for $31,000, was then offered a second time and sold for another $31,000.
“The money raised at the Stampede auction will not only benefit children currently at Shelton, but will also help to benefit future children who have the unique educational needs that only a school like Shelton can address,” said Charlotte Anderson, event co-chair. “Our sincere thanks goes out to the many volunteers and Stampede underwriters as well as friends, faculty, parents, and staff at Shelton who make this event such a success.”
“The parents of Shelton School students worked so hard to make the annual Stampede Benefit Auction an incredible fundraising opportunity for the school,” said Joyce Pickering, Executive Director, Shelton School. “With auction funds we have been able to provide such things as SmartBoards for classrooms as well as enhance our fine arts programs as well as our library/media programs. Founded in 1976, Shelton School is the largest private school for learning-different students in the world. It is a private non-profit, non-sectarian, co-ed school serving students in grades pre-school through 12. Shelton’s niche is providing positive, practical solutions to the problems of LD students, with the goal of remediation and return, where possible, to the mainstream classroom. As a national resource center, Shelton also includes three additional components: The Speech/Language/Hearing Clinic; The Evaluation Center; and The Outreach Center. The school acts as a national demonstration, training, and referral center for educators, physicians and psychologists. It is located at 15720 Hillcrest Rd., Dallas, TX 75248.
