DALLAS (May 13, 2008)… Accountability - what is the measure of student success - TAKS? End of Course Exams? What does workforce ready/college mean? Should all students be required to take the same 4 years of math and science? What are the key educational issues for the next legislative session?
Senator Florence Shapiro will join the Greater Dallas Chamber for lunch on May 21 to discuss these and other issues.
As well as chairing the Senate Education Committee, Senator Shapiro currently co-chairs the Select Committee on Public School Accountability. The 15-member committee is directed to provide a comprehensive review of the public school accountability system and conduct public hearings throughout the state and solicit testimony from parents and other interested persons. Senator Florence Shapiro became chair of the Senate Education Committee in 2003. Recently the senator has passed legislation to overhaul the state's school finance system. Some of her most notable work has been on House Bill 1. This bill is known for providing more money for schools, a teacher incentive pay program, and pay raises, and general education reform, among other initiatives.
The Greater Dallas Chamber’s Education Update luncheon will provide you the opportunity to hear her perspectives on these key issues. The luncheon will be held at the Hilton Dallas Lincoln Centre (5410 Lyndon B. Johnson Fwy., Dallas, TX75240) on May 21 at 12 Noon. The cost to attend is $45 for Greater Dallas Chamber members and $65 for non members. Sponsorship opportunities are still available.
