This is a brief deconstruction of Jason Castro's participation in the brilliant merging between commerce and art that was the 2008 American Idol Ford music video. In this installment, we review the clips starring the final 10, 11 and 12 Idol contestants and figure out how they relate to neighborsgo.com.
Top 10 contestants: I Want You to Want Me
Original artist: Cheap Trick
Premise: Likenesses of Idol contestants on T-shirts, CDs and posters start singing.
Jason’s role: He’s on a tie-dyed shirt, playing a guitar. How perfect is that?
neighborsgo connection: Hearkens back to his guitar-strumming roots and his “discovery” at the Rowlett Battle of the Bands.
Rating:

Perfect concept meets perfect pop song.
Top 11: Should I Stay or Should I Go?
Original artist: The Clash
Premise: Picnic on a hill interrupted by 1950s-era flying saucers, causing Idol contestants to flee in Ford vehicles.
Jason’s role: Just when you think he’s not in this one, JC shows up, behind the scenes, controlling the saucers. Interestingly enough, David Cook, the eventual 2008 Idol winner, is the director.
neighborsgo connection: UFOs are nothing new in Texas.
Rating:
This must’ve storyboarded like a dream, but using a Clash song in this manner warrants an investigation by a war-crimes tribunal. Joe Strummer must be churning in his urn.
Top 12: The Distance
Original artist: Cake
Premise: Idol contestants are presidential candidates on the campaign trail in 2008, being Secret-Serviced around in Ford vehicles.
Jason’s role: The campaign begins, and JC is one of 12 contenders, lost in the crowd, waving boxing gloves and jumping around.
neighborsgo connection: This clip helped build the momentum for the “Jason for president” movement in Rockwall, Texas.
Rating:

And so the campaign begins ...
