This is a brief deconstruction of Jason Castro's participation in the brilliant merging between commerce and art that was the 2008 American Idol Ford music video. In this installment, we review the clips starring the final seven, eight and nine Idol contestants and figure out how they relate to neighborsgo.com.
Top 9: It’s Tricky
Original artist: Run-D.M.C.Premise: Idol contestants hoop it up, old-school, on a basketball court.
Jason’s role: JC’s breakout role – he’s dribbling between his legs, passing behind his back, doing the Jordan/Nowitzki thing with his tongue when he dunks. Baby, he’s a star.neighborsgo connection: Jason Castro Central was created on neighborsgo.com. A kid who can command a stage and a basketball court merits his own area of the site.
Rating:

Good call making David Archuleta the referee.
Top 8: I Just Want to Celebrate
Original artist: Rare Earth
Premise: Idol contestants create art with some paint and four tires.Jason’s role: Another tie-dyed triumph, as he and Idol roommate David Cook rock the screen for the first time as a duo
neighborsgo connection: Later, after Jason is off the show, David Cook will be referred to in headlines on neighborsgo.com as “Jason Castro’s ex-roommate.” (e.g., “Jason Castro’s ex-roommate wins it!”)Rating:

“AMAZING ENDING!” reads the message board on AmericanIdol.com. One world, one love, Ford vehicles. Enough said.
Top 7: I Want to Break Free
Original artist: Queen
Premise: Idol contestants are marionettes bogged down in office drudgery, going through the motions until Ford vehicles appear to liberate them.
Jason’s role: Leave it to the dread-ed one to be the first one to cut the strings and chart his own path, sort of like he did on the show.
neighborsgo connection: Many fans have cited a connection with Jason in a way they can’t quite explain. In a sense, he has helped them “break free” to be who they can/want to be.
Rating:

While the concept for the original Queen video – gender-switching band members – would’ve mystified the Idol audience, it would’ve certainly broken free from convention.
