Opening Day - My Possibilities
Twelve adults with disabilities made history in Collin County today. They attended opening day at My Possibilities in Plano, Texas. My Possibilities is the first full day, full year program for adults with disabilities in Collin County. The Plano center will provide a college-like environment to continue learning - life skills, academics, social skills and pre-vocational skills to prepare of a life on increased independence. In the short span of one year, families, educators, businesses and service provides have come together to create a program that helps these adults mature and participate fully in our community. Today they take one step further to independence.
For most of these adults, the center has been the topic of many dinner table conversations. Many of the families have been to community meetings at the center in the last six months, and volunteered in the center during the renovation. Some have already taken ownership of the day-to-day tasks. Joseph Estes wants to keep the Dr. Pepper vending machine stocked. Kyle Robus wants to vacuum. The families met with the summer teachers last week. Each client introduced himself or herself to the families. Pam Ferrell, Director of Staffing and Fundraising reviewed center operations and the first week's schedule. Charmaine Solomon, Director of Admissions and University Relations discussed plans for parent and client councils to give feedback on the direction of the program.
Robert Hernandez, Executive Director, observed the adults as the arrived for their first day of classes. "The adults here today are starting an exciting journey to independence in a state of the art facility. The expectation of what a person with disabilities can accomplish in North Texas is changing. My Possibilities will help these adults take more ownership of their lives. We have an exciting program that will challenge them to reach their full potentials."
My Possibilities is accepting applications for July enrollment. More information can be found at www.mypossibilities.org
