neighborsgo editor Unfortunately, I don’t have a pet. But after visiting Sherrill Veterinary Hospital in Coppell recently, it made me really want one. I stopped by the facility to visit with the neighborsgo Choice Award winners for Best Veterinarian.

“I enjoyed medicine; I couldn’t decide if I wanted to become a pediatrician or a veterinarian,” Dr. Matt Morrison said.

After choosing to practice as a veterinarian, Morrison came to the hospital in 1998 and became a partner in 2000. He said one of the things he likes is that his patients are honest about their maladies, and that a huge benefit of the job is there is something different to do on a daily basis.

The hospital is a nice, clean facility full of friendly faces, including those of the canine and feline variety. Practice manager Cassy Valle was nice enough to show me around the place; I even got to play with her blue Weimaraner, Boo.

When I asked Morrison and Valle their advice for new pet owners, they had many pointers, with the top piece of advice being to adopt a pet from an animal shelter.

“There will be 350,000 pets euthanized in Dallas County this year,” Morrison said. “The Coppell Animal Shelter does very, very few euthanizations, and they successfully place 90 to 95 percent of animals with homes.”

If you get a pet, Morrison also suggested taking the new family member to obedience school. That might avoid future incidents that Morrison has encountered, such as dogs having to undergo surgery after eating tube socks, fabrics and even a door mat!

For the future, Morrison and staff have high hopes and know what sets them apart from other facilities in the area.

“I think it’s our attempt to give [patients] high-quality care,” Morrison said. “[The staff] has been here for a long time; there’s not a lot of turnover, plus there’s a family feel. We are part of the community — not just a business.”

The Sherrill Veterinary Hospital is located at 1709 E. Belt Line Road.
