Yes, it's that time again! Time to begin preparing children for the first day of school. Sound a little early? Well, at Metrocrest Social Services (MSS), we begin early to ensure children of eligible MSS clients will start their first day of classes as well-prepared as every other student in the building. With our school supplies distribution and Shoes for Kids programs, the smiles of children (and their parents) are abundant!
Once again, ST Microelectronics of Carrollton is the primary corporate sponsor, providing not only the financial support for many of the school supplies, but also allowing their employees to volunteer during work hours to help with the first week of distribution. In addition, local civic groups, individuals, faith groups and other corporations will host their own school supply drives to provide backpacks filled with school supplies to an anticipated 1,100 students this year"The generosity of the community is the backbone of this program," states Bunny Summerlin, MSS Executive Director. "Each year we continue to see the need in our community rise, but so does the compassion of the neighbors all around us. The donations pour in and make all this possible."
School supplies are being collected through August 11. New supplies needed include: wide-rule notebook paper, thick & thin washable markers, colored map pencils, "marble" composition books, 5" sharp-point scissors, pencil bags, small backpacks (ages 5-10), black "Sharpie" markers, and black dry-erase markers. Items may be dropped off at the agency at 1111 W. Belt Line (GravleyCenter), Carrollton. If you or your group need a pick-up of bulk donations or have any questions, please contact Dana Wilson, Director of Special Programs and Volunteers, at dwilson@metrocrestsocialservices.org or (972) 446-2100 ext. 19.
This year, children can look forward to walking into school with a new pair of shoes, thanks to the Shoes for Kids program at Metrocrest Social Services. This program is supported, both financially and with volunteers, by six churches and several Marriott hotels in the greater Dallas area. Last year, volunteers fit 850 children with new shoes at Payless Shoe Source in the TrinityValley shopping center. Payless opens early on five days to make this program possible.
It's a great to know that children will be proudly walking the halls of schools around town this year with a new pair of shoes and a full backpack on the first day of school, thanks to your support of the MSS back-to-school programs.
