They swayed in their grass skirts. They pretended to be dogs and barked along to the “Blue Danube Waltz.” They also performed a scene from High School Musical and some other numbers, including one where their moms joined in.
It’s time for the Show Biz Kids to show their stuff.
At 7 p.m. July 24, these kids will perform at the city’s annual One-Act Play Festival at the IrvingArtsCenter.
Directed by CimarronRecreationCenter recreation specialist Maria Seppy, who’s worked for the city almost a quarter of a century, the multicultural group learns more than singing and dancing. Kids also pick up social skills.
“At first my girls refused to perform,” said Aashna Kishinchandani, mother of Sachi, 5, and Surina, 4. “But now they love it. It’s gives them such self-confidence.”
Ria Waghray, 4, has become fearless, according to her mom. So has Biyanka Hati, 4. A veteran, Nashwa Savar, 12, said she loves performing and helping out. She’s Ms. Seppy’s right-hand kid.
“She is so wonderful and helps me with everything,” Ms. Seppy said.
Among the other performers are Nithyashree Thirunavukarsu Pillai, Suvan Cheemacamarr, Neha Jain, Anshu Jain, Dorian Villalba, Nikita Ganji, Saumya Rawat, Bavan Nithyashu, Ruhaama Mahmood, Nehad Zafar, and Mohid and Nawal Saeed.
Several of the children will also perform in the center’s one-act play.
Jennifer Nuño is directing her eighth production for Cimarron. Two years ago, she and her actors won first place in the competition for a cute production called "It's a Small World."
The festival is free. Call 972-252-2787.
